The Male Swimmers With The Fastest Four-Stroke 400 IM Add-Ups – 2026 Version (2026)

The Race to the Top: Unveiling the Fastest Male Swimmers in the 400 IM – 2026 Edition

More than two years have passed since we last dove into the world of the 400 IM, analyzing the fastest add-ups in this grueling event. But here's where it gets controversial: who truly deserves the title of the fastest? Today, we're back with a fresh look, focusing on the men's field, where a new champion has emerged.

Thomas Ceccon, the Italian swimming sensation, has claimed the top spot, dethroning Michael Andrew by a razor-thin margin of just 0.08 seconds. Ceccon's secret weapon? A blistering 100m butterfly performance at the World Championships semi-finals, clocking an impressive 50.42 seconds, the 14th fastest time in history. While Andrew holds a significant advantage in breaststroke, Ceccon's improvements in backstroke and freestyle, coupled with a half-second drop in his 100m breaststroke, secured his victory.

And this is the part most people miss: It's not just about raw speed. Strategy and consistency across all four strokes are crucial. Take Michael Phelps, for instance. Despite having the slowest 100m breaststroke among the top ten, his overall prowess in the other strokes keeps him firmly in third place.

The 2026 rankings showcase a more diverse field compared to two years ago. Hubert Kos, alongside Ceccon, has broken into the top ten, thanks to significant improvements in his breaststroke, backstroke, and freestyle.

Interestingly, only two of the ten fastest 200 IM swimmers in history didn't make this list. Laszlo Cseh, despite his impressive 200 IM record, is held back by a slower breaststroke. Shaine Casas, the other notable absence, possesses incredible speed in the breaststroke leg of his IM races, recently outpacing Leon Marchand at the World Cup. If he focuses on the 400 IM, he could easily challenge the top five.

The list also features surprising contenders like Finlay Knox, the 2024 World Champion in the 200 IM, who ranks 7th here despite not having an elite 100m stroke. NCAA standouts Nate Germonprez and Danny Kovac, yet to make a World or Olympic team, also make an appearance, showcasing their impressive all-around skills.

A quarter of this list have trained under the legendary Bob Bowman, highlighting his expertise in nurturing IM swimmers.

This updated ranking sparks intriguing questions: Can Ceccon maintain his lead? Will Casas translate his breaststroke prowess into a 400 IM challenge? And who are the rising stars ready to disrupt the top 20?

We want to hear your thoughts! Who do you think is the most well-rounded swimmer? Are there any hidden gems we missed? Let the debate begin in the comments below.

  • Just Outside the Top 20: Tomoe Hvas (3:38.92), Matt Jensen (3:38.95), Joe Litchfield (3:38.97), and Arsenio Bustos (3:39.02) are all within a tenth of a second of making the cut. Max Litchfield (3:49.52), Joe's brother, is just over 10 seconds behind.
  • Ksawery Masiuk: His times in fly, back, and free are almost identical to Matt Grevers (#13), but we couldn't find a breaststroke time for him.
  • Bernhard Reitshammer (3:40.30) and Jeremy Stravius (3:40.31): These two swimmers just missed the top 20, but their paths to this point are vastly different. Reitshammer excels in breaststroke, while Stravius struggles in that stroke.
