Get ready for a thrilling evolution in rally racing! The FIA has unveiled an exciting glimpse into the future of the World Rally Championship (WRC) with the introduction of the new cars set to debut in 2027, crafted under a fresh set of technical regulations.
These innovative regulations, which will be in effect for a decade, aim to make the sport more accessible and cost-effective, enticing new manufacturers and teams to join the competition. Each car will adhere to a budget cap of €345,000, produce around 290 horsepower, and feature a space frame chassis that incorporates elements from the Rally2 series.
Powering these vehicles will be a 1.6-litre turbocharged internal combustion engine, complemented by a four-wheel-drive system and a five-speed transmission. The suspension will utilize a double wishbone layout, while the braking and steering systems will be adapted from existing Rally2 specifications, ensuring a high-performance yet economical setup tailored for the WRC.
In the initial phase, the WRC27 cars will race alongside Rally2 vehicles in 2027, with the FIA committed to maintaining a level playing field by adjusting vehicle weights as needed before the season kicks off.
The specifications for the WRC27 cars include a tubular frame chassis with dimensions that range from a minimum length of 4100mm to a maximum of 4300mm, a width of up to 1875mm, a minimum wheelbase of 2600mm, and a height of at least 1270mm.
The safety cell, which builds on the design introduced with the 2022 Rally1 cars, enhances protection while simplifying the overall structure and reducing costs. This new design significantly improves safety by minimizing intrusion and enhancing energy absorption during frontal, side, roof, and rear impacts.
While the initial focus is on a sustainably fueled 1.6-litre turbocharged engine, the regulations are flexible enough to allow for the introduction of alternative powertrains in the future, although a timeline for this change has yet to be established.
Competitors will also have the freedom to choose from a variety of body styles, including sedans, hatchbacks, crossovers, and custom designs, all of which will fit over the predefined spaceframe chassis. The FIA has showcased several concept designs that illustrate the potential diversity in vehicle appearances.
This announcement comes on the heels of the introduction of a new constructor, Project Rally One, which is set to join the WRC in 2027. Based in Belgium, this team has confirmed its entry as the first new tuner to develop a car under the 2027 regulations. The design and construction of the chassis are complete, and prototype assembly is currently in progress. Following this, the car will undergo an extensive development program, including over 6,000 kilometers of testing on both gravel and asphalt, with the first shakedown planned for spring 2026.
Led by seasoned motorsport engineer Lionel Hansen, along with former FIA rally director Yves Matton and Prospeed, Project Rally One will join established competitors like Toyota, who are also working on their WRC27 vehicle.

Adding to this, FIA Deputy President for Sport Malcolm Wilson stated, "Flexibility is a hallmark of the WRC27 regulations. The new Rally1 concepts we have introduced are designed to these specifications, showcasing how this flexibility can be practically applied. For the first time, we highlight a range of technical solutions and vehicle concepts that can be developed within this framework, all while meeting the rigorous demands of the FIA World Rally Championship."
