Amazon Data Centers Under Attack: Physical Risks and Cloud Security (2026)

Amazon's Data Centers Under Fire: Physical Risks and Regional Vulnerabilities

The recent drone strikes on Amazon Web Services (AWS) data centers in the Middle East have brought to light the region's rapid data center growth and the industry's susceptibility to conflict. The attacks caused structural damage, power disruptions, and water damage, prompting AWS to advise customers to migrate servers to other regions.

These strikes are a stark reminder that cloud computing, while powerful, relies on physical infrastructure vulnerable to various disasters. AWS's data centers, which host critical online services, are massive and challenging to conceal. As such, organizations using cloud services in the Middle East should consider shifting their computing to less vulnerable regions.

The Middle East's data center growth has been significant, with AWS clustering its facilities in 39 geographic regions, including three in the Middle East. Each region is divided into availability zones, isolated and physically separated by a meaningful distance, yet within 100 kilometers of each other. This setup ensures seamless workload balancing and continuous operations during emergencies.

However, the attacks highlight the need for robust security measures. While AWS's data centers have physical security features like guards, fences, and surveillance, they are designed to prevent intruders, not missile attacks. The incident underscores the importance of comprehensive disaster preparedness in cloud computing.

Mike Chapple, an IT professor, emphasizes that cloud computing's magic lies in its ability to handle workloads, but it still requires physical facilities. The attacks serve as a wake-up call, reminding us that cloud infrastructure is only as strong as its physical underpinnings.
